SHANGHAI — Tesla kicked off deliveries of the Model Y L, a locally produced six-seat battery-electric crossover, in China on Sept. 2, the company said in a posting on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
The Model Y L, with a starting price of 339,000 yuan ($47,446), is Tesla’s first product targeting family users in China.
It is 4,997 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,668 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm.
For comparison, the standard Model Y, a five-seater, measures 4,797 mm in length, 2,129 mm in width and 1,624 mm in height, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase.
The Model Y L has a range of 751 kilometers (467 miles) on one charge. With a top speed of 125 mph, it can accelerate to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, according to information on Tesla’s China website.
The Model Y L arrives in the market when Tesla is losing ground to local startups including Xpeng, Nio and Xiaomi, which market intelligent EVs.
Shipments from Tesla’s Shanghai plant, which also produces the Model Y and Model 3, dropped 14 percent year over year to some 432,000 in the first seven months of this year, according to the China Passenger Car Association.
To reverse its sales fall in China, Tesla has slashed the price of the Model 3’s long-range rear-wheel-drive version by 10,000 yuan ($1,400) less than one month after launching sales of the variant.
The Model 3 variant, which can go up to 515 miles on one charge, now sells for $36,347, Tesla said on its China website Sept. 1.
The Model 3 variant was priced at $37,747 when it went on sale Aug. 12.
