BYD‘s (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) ultra-luxury sub-brand Yangwang has set a new global electric vehicle (EV) top speed record, showcasing its technological prowess.

A Yangwang U9 electric supercar engineering test vehicle achieved a speed of 472.41 km/h at Germany’s ATP test track, setting a new world record for EV top speed, the BYD sub-brand announced today.

Launched in China on February 25, 2024, the two-seat electric supercar starts at RMB 1.68 million ($234,630).

It features four motors, each delivering a peak power of 240 kW, for a combined peak output of 960 kW.

Its powertrain generates up to 1,288 horsepower and 1,680 Nm of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.36 seconds.

In August 2024, the Yangwang U9 achieved a top speed of 375.12 km/h during track testing. Two months later, in October, the electric supercar reached a top speed of 391.94 km/h.

These top speed records surpass the 350 km/h speed of China’s high-speed rail — the fastest speed ordinary people can experience outside of air travel.

The Yangwang U9’s new speed records may be attributed to its more powerful motors.

Earlier this month, Yangwang filed for a new U9 variant equipped with four motors — the same configuration as the current production model — but with each motor’s power output doubled.

The four motors in the new Yangwang U9 each deliver a peak power of 555 kW, 2.3 times the 240 kW output of the current production model.

Six U9 units were delivered in July, bringing cumulative deliveries to 173 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
