In the third week of August, the Chinese EV market was mainly up. Onvo was up 8%, Xpen was up 4%, and BYD was up 8%, while Tesla was down 26%, compared with the week before.
Nio Group registered 7,571 units, up 5.3% from 7,190 the week before.
Key events to watch:
The weekly brand’s EV sales were published by Li Auto. However, Li Auto ceased publishing them in March 2025 after the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) “recommended” that Li Auto, media and any third parties end it. CAAM says weekly data “undermines the industry order” and “fuels vicious competition.” Since then, Li Auto has published only its own weekly EV registration.
The weekly data are used by consultants, analysts, or investors to see the sales trend and forecast monthly deliveries. They show how many cars were registered for road traffic, which can be later compared with automakers’ self-reported monthly sales, which, unlike registrations, include cars for showrooms, test cars, and other uses.
Most of China’s media have followed CAAM’s recommendation to stop publishing weekly figures. CarNewsChina continues to publish weekly insurance registrations, based on China EV DataTracker data.
The numbers are rounded and present the brand’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in China, the government term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.
Week 34 of 2025 (W34) was between August 18 and August 24.
BYD registered 70,600 vehicles, up 8.3% from 65,200 the week before, but down 19.59% from 87,800 in the same week last year. In the first three weeks of August, BYD registered 190,600 vehicles in China.
Leapmotor registered 12,100 vehicles, up 16.3% from 10,400 the week before and nearly doubling from 6,200 a year earlier (+95.16%). In the first three weeks of August, Leapmotor registered 31,800 vehicles.
Tesla registered 10,300 vehicles, down 26.4% from 14,000 the week before and down 27.46% from 14,200 a year ago. In the first three weeks of August, Tesla registered 37,700 vehicles in China.
Aito registered 9,800 vehicles, up 27.3% from 7,700 the week before and 8.89% higher than 9,000 in the same week last year. In the first three weeks of August, Aito registered 24,500 vehicles.
Xpeng registered 8,200 vehicles, up 3.8% from 7,900 the week before and up 192.86% from 2,800 in the same week last year. In the first three weeks of August, Xpeng registered 24,000 vehicles.
Xiaomi registered 8,200 vehicles, up 14.4% from 7,170 the week before and up 290.48% from 2,100 a year earlier. In the first three weeks of August, Xiaomi registered 22,170 vehicles.

Li Auto registered 7,600 vehicles, up 35.7% from 5,600 the week before, but down 34.48% from 11,600 in the same week last year. In the first three weeks of August, Li Auto registered 18,500 vehicles.
GAC Aion registered 5,800 vehicles, up 16.0% from 5,000 the week before, but down 26.58% from 7,900 in the same week last year.
Onvo registered 4,104 vehicles, up 8.3% from 3,790 the week before. No year-on-year data is available. In the first three weeks of August, Onvo registered 11,094 vehicles.
Model sales breakdown:
- L90 large SUV: 2,542 units
- L60 mid-size SUV: 1,562 units
In August so far (August 1-24), Onvo L90 registered 8,870 units in China.
Deepal registered 4,000 vehicles, the same as the previous week and up 5.26% from 3,800 in the same week last year. In the first three weeks of August, Deepal registered 11,700 vehicles.
Fang Cheng Bao registered 3,800 vehicles, up 13.1% from 3,360 the week before and up 151.66% from 1,510 a year earlier. In the first three weeks of August, Fang Cheng Bao registered 10,160 vehicles.
Zeekr registered 3,600 vehicles, up 9.1% from 3,300 the week before and up 20.00% from 3,000 in the same week last year. In the first three weeks of August, Zeekr registered 10,200 vehicles.
Nio registered 2,584 vehicles, up 2.5% from 2,520 the week before, but down 43.83% from 4,600 a year earlier. In the first three weeks of August, Nio registered 7,204 vehicles.
Avatr registered 2,210 vehicles, up 10.5% from 2,000 the week before. No year-on-year data is available. In the first three weeks of August, Avatr registered 6,010 vehicles.
Firefly registered 883 vehicles, almost unchanged from 880 the week before. No year-on-year data is available. In the first three weeks of August, Firefly registered 2,463 vehicles.
