Most major electric vehicle (EV) makers mostly saw an increase in insurance registrations in China last week, as delivery volumes typically rise toward the end of the month.

During the week of August 18-24 — week 34 of 2025 — Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) recorded 7,571 vehicle insurance registrations in China, a 5.30 percent increase from the previous week’s 7,190 units, according to figures shared today on Weibo by several automotive industry observers.

Nio’s main brand recorded 2,584 insurance registrations last week, up 2.54 percent from the previous week’s 2,520.

Its sub-brand Onvo recorded 4,104 insurance registrations last week, the second-highest on record, up 8.28 percent from the previous week’s 3,790.

The Firefly sub-brand’s insurance registration volume last week was 883, flat from the previous week’s 880.

Onvo launched its L90 flagship electric SUV (sport utility vehicle) on July 31 and began deliveries the next day on August 1.

Nio Inc delivered 21,017 vehicles in July, marking the fourth consecutive month exceeding the 20,000-unit threshold, according to data released on August 1.

This represents a 2.53 percent increase from the 20,498 units delivered in the same period last year, though it marks a 15.68 percent decrease from the 24,925 units delivered in June.

The Nio main brand delivered 12,675 units in July, Onvo delivered 5,976 units, and Firefly delivered 2,366 units.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) registered 10,300 vehicles for insurance in China last week, a decrease of 26.43 percent from the previous week’s 14,000.

On Tuesday last week, Tesla launched the six-seat Model Y L in China, which is larger than the five-seat Model Y.

The Model Y L starts at RMB 339,000 in China, with deliveries set to begin in September.

Tesla’s retail sales in China in July were 40,617 units, a decrease of 12.14 percent from the same period last year and a decrease of 33.94 percent from June, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) registered 8,200 vehicles last week, up 3.93 percent from the previous week’s 7,890.

It delivered 36,717 vehicles in July, surpassing the previous record of 36,695 set in December 2024 to set a new high.

This marks the ninth consecutive month since November 2024 that Xpeng’s monthly deliveries have exceeded 30,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 229.45 percent and a 6.08 percent increase from June’s 34,611 units.

Xpeng unveiled its next-generation P7 electric sedan on August 6, with the official launch scheduled for August 27.

The company will launch an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variant of its X9 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) in the fourth quarter, which has already been included in a regulatory filing catalog.

Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI) had 7,600 insurance registrations last week, up 35.23 percent from the previous week’s 5,620.

The company launched the Li i8, its first all-electric SUV, on July 29. On August 5, Li Auto relaunched the Li i8, reducing the available variants from three to one and lowering prices following disappointing initial adoption.

On August 13, Li Auto said that its target is to deliver 8,000 to 10,000 Li i8 units by the end of September. Deliveries of the Li i8 began on August 20.

The company delivered 30,731 vehicles in July, a year-on-year decrease of 39.74 percent and a month-on-month decrease of 15.29 percent.

This marks the second consecutive month of year-on-year declines in monthly deliveries for Li Auto, with a total of 234,669 vehicles delivered year-to-date, down 2.21 percent year-on-year.

BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) brand vehicles saw 70,600 insurance registrations last week, up 8.28 percent from the previous week’s 65,200.

The company sold 344,296 vehicles in July, up 0.56 percent year-on-year, but down 10.01 percent from June.

Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) had 8,200 insurance registrations last week, up 14.37 percent from the previous week’s 7,170.

Xiaomi EV delivered 30,452 vehicles in July, up 19.61 percent from 25,459 in June, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

Xiaomi launched the YU7 on June 26, its first electric SUV and a competitor to the Tesla Model Y, with deliveries beginning on July 6.

The Zeekr (NYSE: ZK) brand saw 3,600 insurance registrations last week, up 10.43 percent from the previous week’s 3,260.

Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) recorded 12,100 insurance registrations last week, up 16.35 percent from the previous week’s 10,400.

The company delivered 50,129 vehicles in July, marking the first time monthly deliveries exceeded the 50,000 threshold, up 126.90 percent from 22,093 in the same period last year and 4.42 percent from 48,006 in June.

Leapmotor achieved net revenue of RMB 30 million in the first half of 2025, marking its first positive net revenue for a half-year period.

Given the strong sales performance, Leapmotor has raised its 2025 annual sales target from the previous range of 500,000 to 600,000 units to 580,000 to 650,000 units.

Aito — the brand jointly developed by Huawei and Seres Group — recorded 9,800 insurance registrations last week, up 27.27 percent from the previous week’s 7,700.
