BYD is building nearly every part of its EVs: From batteries to now tablets

BYD is now building its own tablets in-house, adding to its arsenal of self-developed tech. The new full-stack tablet shows that BYD is not just dominating the EV market, but is also out to reshape the industry.

BYD adds tablets to its self-developed tech

Earlier this week, BYD unveiled the new tech on social media, accompanied by the caption: “unlimited excitement, just one touch away.”

The new tablets will be the first made in-house by BYD as it expands into new spaces. BYD is best known for its low-cost electric cars and “Blade” EV batteries, which are used by several major car makers like Tesla, Ford, BMW, Toyota, and others.

BYD has been building batteries since the ’90s. Initially used to power cellphones, they are now used to power electric cars around the world.

And that’s just scratching the surface of it. BYD’s in-house capabilities extend far beyond that. It builds nearly every component used in the Dolphin, BYD’s popular electric hatch, except the tires and windows. That’s pretty impressive.

The company has also grown to become one of China’s largest contract manufacturers. BYD’s subsidiary manufactures smartphones, laptops, vehicle electronics, and more. It’s also a major supplier for Apple, assembling iPads and iPhones.

Although BYD is keeping most details secret for now, it did say the new tablets will debut in the upcoming Tai 7, a hybrid SUV from its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand.

The new tech will unlock infotainment features, including multi-screen viewing, connectivity, and more, with Chinese buyers opting for the latest in-car entertainment.

After the first mass-produced Tai 7 rolled off the assembly line earlier this week, BYD announced that the new hybrid SUV will go on sale in the fourth quarter. The Tai 7 is the second model from BYD’s sub-brand. It follows the smaller Tai 3, which launched in March.

In February, BYD upgraded 21 of its most popular vehicles with its God’s Eye smart driving system. The new tablets show BYD is out to dominate the future of tech, not just EVs.
