China is different, and that is definitely the case with electric vehicles. China gets new EVs and new EV tech first, and sometimes it’s the only market that gets it. That’s even been the case with Tesla in the past several years, despite being an American company. Now we’ve got another example of that.
Tesla has launched a new Model 3 option in China that has 830 km (about 515 miles) of range on a full charge. For comparison, the longest-range Model 3 in the US has only 363 miles (584 km) of range on a full charge, at a price of $35,000. Of course, that new 830 km range is based on the CLTC rating system, which is a bit more generous than the US EPA rating system. Still … that’s up from a range rating of 713 kilometers (443 miles) before July 1 and a range rating of 753 kilometers (468 miles) since July 1 (before this new trim’s release).
Also, the starting price of this new Model 3 trim is just RMB 269,500 ($37,540). For a pure EV with 830 km (515 miles) of range? The starting price of the base Model 3 is RMB 235,500 ($32,800) in China and has a range rating of 634 km (394 miles).
There are now 4 trims of the Model 3 available in China. It adds to the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 Standard Range, all-wheel-drive Model 3 Long Range, and the all-wheel-drive Model 3 Performance.
The new long-range Model 3 uses a 78.4 kWh battery and uses LG Energy Solution batteries.
Deliveries of the new Model 3 are supposed to begin next month, in September.
Tesla has been struggling to sell as many vehicles in 2025 as it did in 2024 in China, and 2024 was down from 2023. In the first 7 months of the year, Tesla sales are down more than 6% in China. This seems to be another effort to revive interest, but we’ll have to see how well it does. Competition has heated up dramatically in China, and it’s not going to get any weaker. Arguably, Tesla needs new models, not just new trims of old models. We will see.
