Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) tech is once again turning heads — this time in China.

A new round of independent collision avoidance tests conducted by Chinese media outlet DCARSTUDIO evaluated the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) of 36 vehicles from Tesla and a wide range of Chinese automakers, including NIO, Xpeng, BYD, and Xiaomi. The goal? To see how these systems perform across six real-world driving scenarios, including highway driving and nighttime conditions.

Despite not yet being widely available in China due to regulatory delays, Tesla’s vision-based FSD system came out on top. The refreshed Model 3 RWD and 2023 Model X Long Range each passed 5 out of 6 test scenarios — more than any other vehicle tested. The next best performers managed only 3 out of 6. Incredibly, 13 of the 36 vehicles tested failed every single test.

Notably, many of Tesla’s competitors leveraged LiDAR-based systems but still couldn’t match Tesla’s software-driven, camera-only approach. This makes Tesla’s dominance all the more impressive, especially given that — as CEO Elon Musk noted on X — the company has no local training data in China due to laws preventing data export. According to Musk, Tesla is now incorporating data from test tracks and its world simulator to help push performance even further.

According to one eagle-eyed viewer, the driver may have disengaged FSD too early during one of the Model X tests, potentially messing up a perfect 6/6 score for the luxury all-electric SUV. “I just noticed that for the Model X, the driver disengaged FSD quite early (blue line goes away) at 25:47. Compared to the Model 3, I wonder if you just let the car do AEB if it would have stopped?” they pointed out in the comments of the YouTube video.

Here are timestamps for the parts of the video that feature Tesla vehicles:

DCARSTUDIO has said an English version of the test video is coming soon. Tesla recently also shared footage of FSD smoothly navigating the complex Magic Roundabout in London, where it likewise awaits regulatory approval — along with the rest of Europe and China. Earlier this week, Musk said he remains hopeful that FSD approval in Europe and China will arrive “soon.”
