The all-new MG4 has been spotted at dealerships across China as reported by Sohu Auto, offering the first glimpse of the updated compact electric hatchback ahead of its official pre-sale beginning on August 5. The model, which represents a comprehensive overhaul of the current MG4, includes significant upgrades to its exterior design, interior technology, and powertrain. A full market launch is expected in early September.

In response to the growing popularity of the compact segment, which includes the BYD Dolphin, the new MG4 is SAIC Motor’s latest attempt to expand its footprint in the domestic market. According to images circulating online, the vehicle now adopts a more rounded front-end design with a closed-off grille, teardrop-shaped LED headlights, and an illuminated MG logo. A redesigned trapezoidal lower grille, C-shaped air deflectors, and a sportier bumper structure help distinguish the updated model from its predecessor.

New MG4 has a larger body compared to the outgoing model.

The new MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm—making it larger than both the previous MG4 and the BYD Dolphin. At the rear, the car features a full-width arrow-style taillight and blacked-out lower bumper. It rides on 17-inch petal-style alloy wheels.

The interior features a symmetrical dashboard layout with a floating central display, a rectangular digital instrument panel, and dual-tone themes. The MG × Oppo smart cockpit system is integrated into the infotainment setup, running on Qualcomm’s 8155 chip. This platform supports voice-based vehicle preparation, seamless app integration, cross-device interconnectivity, gesture-based navigation, and AI-powered functions.

Interior materials have been upgraded, featuring leather-wrapped surfaces, chrome accents, ambient lighting, and practical tech features, including a 50W wireless phone charger and a column-mounted gear selector. The front seats are now integrated sport-style units with power adjustment, heating, and ventilation. In the rear, a flat floor, panoramic roof with sunshade, air vents, USB ports, and 60:40 folding seats aim to improve comfort and utility. The trunk offers a three-layer configuration for flexible storage.

The MG4 is equipped with a 70 kWh battery pack and a 120 kW (163 hp) rear-mounted motor, configured as a single-motor rear-wheel-drive system. The model debuts semi-solid-state battery technology for the MG brand according to MG Brand Division General Manager Chen Cui, with two versions available offering CLTC ranges of 437 km and 537 km. Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes approximately 20 minutes. The MG4 also features a CTB (cell-to-body) structural battery system and is equipped with front MacPherson and rear torsion beam suspension.

Driver assistance capabilities could include an L2+ system with highway-level navigation-on-autopilot (NOA), though final specifications and pricing will be confirmed closer to the official launch. The new MG4’s combination of increased size, ingenious cockpit, and updated battery tech positions it to compete directly with recent entries in the compact EV segment.
