BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has launched the Xia MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) in Mexico, continuing its expansion in South America.
The Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker launched the model in Mexico on June 25, rebranding it as the BYD M9 locally, marking its first hybrid MPV in the country, according to an announcement today.
BYD offers one variant of the MPV in Mexico, with a starting price of 979,800 Mexican pesos ($52,180).
The vehicle has an NEDC battery range of 95 kilometers and a combined NEDC range of 945 kilometers when fully fueled and charged.
The introduction of the Xia is an important strategic move for BYD in Mexico’s premium NEV market, said Ray Zou, country manager of BYD’s Mexico subsidiary.
The BYD Xia was launched in China on January 8, based on BYD’s latest fifth-generation DM hybrid technology.
The three-row, seven-seat MPV measures 5,145 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,045 mm.
It is available in four variants in China, with starting prices of RMB 249,800 ($34,870), RMB 259,800, RMB 285,800, and RMB 309,800.
BYD sold 382,585 NEVs in June, marking the highest monthly sales figure of this year, according to data released on July 1.
The Xia MPV sold 5,018 units in June, bringing its cumulative sales to 47,785 units.
The company sold 90,049 vehicles overseas in June, representing a year-on-year increase of 233.58 percent and a month-on-month increase of 1.13 percent.
Earlier today, Bloomberg reported that due to geopolitical tensions and uncertainty caused by US trade policies, BYD has put on hold its plans to build a major factory in Mexico.
