
BYD has made headlines once again with its ultra-affordable Seagull electric vehicle, which emerged as the top-selling model for the company last month.
A staggering 55,000 Seagull units were sold, showcasing the model’s appeal, particularly given its starting price of under $10,000 in China, making it the most economical option within BYD’s lineup.
In April alone, BYD reported a record sales figure of 380,089 new energy vehicles, a testament to the company’s expanding footprint in the global automotive market.
The ‘Mini Lamborghini’ Seagull Targets Global Markets with Competitive Pricing
Notably, fully electric vehicles outsold hybrids for the first time in over a year, with BYD selling 195,740 pure electric cars—up 45% from the same month in 2024. This trend aligns with the company’s ambitious growth strategy as it penetrates international markets.
The Seagull is expected to make its European debut later this year as the ‘Dolphin Surf,’ with projected prices starting at below £20,000 ($26,000). Before its European launch, the Seagull has already been introduced in countries like Mexico, Colombia, the Philippines, and Brazil, and is anticipated to see significant demand in these markets.
Measuring 3,780 mm in length, 1,715 mm in width, and 1,540 mm in height, the Seagull is notably compact, even smaller than the Volkswagen ID.3. Designed by Wolfgang Egger, a former Lamborghini and Audi designer, it has garnered the nickname ‘Mini Lamborghini’ in China. The vehicle offers a choice of battery packs, providing a range of up to 405 km (252 miles) on a single charge.
As BYD’s European push continues, analysts expect sales to more than double from 83,000 vehicles last year to 186,000 in 2025. The competitive pricing strategy of the Seagull ensures that it remains attractive to European consumers, even amid potential tariffs.
