BYD’s (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) largest car carrier, BYD Shenzhen, has started its maiden ocean voyage after entering service last week.

BYD Shenzhen kicked off its first ocean voyage on April 27 in Taicang, Jiangsu province, loading more than 7,000 BYD new energy vehicles (NEVs) and sailing to Brazil, the company announced yesterday.

The ship is the world’s largest car carrier with 9,200 standard loading spaces, an area equivalent to 20 soccer fields, BYD said.

BYD Shenzhen is the fourth specialized car carrier operated by BYD and will further enhance the global transportation efficiency of its NEVs, the company said.

BYD Shenzhen’s first voyage is destined for Brazil, highlighting BYD’s commitment to promoting sustainable development in the country, it said.

The vessel has an overall length of 219.9 meters, a beam of 37.7 meters, a service speed of 19 knots and a total of 16 decks.

BYD Shenzhen was officially delivered to BYD on April 22 in Yizheng, Jiangsu province, and officially put into service.

After BYD Shenzhen, BYD Changsha and BYD Xi’an are not far away from being put into service.

BYD Changsha is the fifth in BYD’s fleet and its second car carrier with a capacity of 9,200 vehicles. Last month, BYD said BYD Changsha was about to be launched.

BYD Xi’an, BYD’s sixth car carrier, was officially launched on April 2.

BYD Explorer No. 1 is the first vessel in BYD’s fleet and can carry 7,000 vehicles. The vessel, which entered service in January 2024, was chartered to BYD by another shipowner.

BYD Hefei is BYD’s first car carrier as a shipowner and the first to be named after the city where one of its vehicle production sites is located, with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles.

BYD Hefei completed construction at the end of September 2024 and began its maiden voyage on January 7 of this year, sailing to Europe with nearly 5,000 NEVs.

BYD Changzhou, launched in October 2024, is the second BYD vessel named after a vehicle production site after BYD Hefei.

The 7,000-vehicle-capable BYD Changzhou went into operation in December 2024, with its maiden voyage carrying 5,000 NEVs to Europe.

BYD’s car sales target for 2025 is 5.5 million units, including more than 800,000 in overseas markets, according to local media.
