Today, at the HarmonyOS Smart Driving Technology Innovation event, Huawei officially unveiled its dual-optical path image-grade LiDAR system. According to the announcement, this product pioneers a dual-optical path architecture that increases resolution by up to 4 times, making it the world’s highest specification 896-line LiDAR in mass production.

According to Huaiwei, the system can consistently and clearly identify small objects as low as 14 centimetres in height from 120 meters away, including fallen traffic cones, flat tyres, and other low-reflectivity targets.

Jin Yuzhi, CEO of Huawei Intelligent Automotive Solutions BU, explained that this LiDAR product integrates two laser receiving units with different focal lengths. One provides a wide-angle overview while the other focuses on long-distance details ahead. Working together, they create a “high-definition picture-in-picture” imaging effect. This allows the system to clearly capture small obstacles above the chassis, low-reflectivity obstacles, and irregularly shaped obstacles. As an example, he noted that with the new dual-optical path image-grade LiDAR, even a dog wagging its tail can be clearly seen from a distance of 55 meters.

According to public information, the “line” in LiDAR refers to the number of laser emission channels in the vertical direction. Each line corresponds to an independent laser beam. The more lines, the denser the vertical scanning, resulting in clearer 3D point clouds that can more accurately identify pedestrians, vehicles, obstacles, and other details. Common LiDARs have 16, 32, or 128 lines, with higher line counts providing better perception accuracy and detection effectiveness. Previously, the highest line count for mass-produced LiDAR in the industry was 520 lines.

The Aito M9 and Maextro S800 under HIMA will be the first vehicles equipped with Huawei’s 896-line LiDAR. According to Cailian Press, an insider revealed that more Huawei-collaborated brands at various price points will incorporate the 896-line LiDAR. Actually, just today, Avatr and Voyah, both non-HIMA brands, announced that their new models (Avatr 12 and Voyah FE) will also be equipped with this LiDAR.

The AITO M9 and Maextro S800, which are the first to feature the new dual-optical path image-grade LiDAR, are now officially open for orders, with suggested retail prices starting from 479,800 yuan (Aito M9, 69,500 USD) and 728,000 yuan (Maextro S800, 105,500 USD).
