A recently leaked test video showcases a heavily camouflaged vehicle effortlessly ascending a daunting “Tianmen Mountain Thousand-Step Staircase” replica. The footage, which surfaced just days before a major BYD technology press event, suggests the vehicle is a new iteration of the Yangwang U8 flagship SUV.

The video, marked with clear “Tianmen Mountain Thousand-Step Staircase” signage at the test site, captures the mysterious prototype’s climbing capabilities. A digital counter visible in the bottom right corner of the screen indicated “1289th test,” underscoring the extensive development process behind the vehicle.

Observers quoted by Sina Auto note that the meticulously constructed test rig faithfully replicates the extreme gradient of the iconic Tianmen Mountain steps. And, the replica steps are fashioned from steel plates, offering less grip than the natural rock surface of the actual mountain, thus presenting a greater challenge to the vehicle’s traction and power systems.

Details gleaned from the camouflaged test car reveal a distinctive “boxy” design and substantial dimensions, positioning it as a flagship model. A prominent round “backpack” (likely a spare tyre cover) adorns the rear, complemented by unique taillight styling. While not officially confirmed, the combination of these design cues and the vehicle’s performance has led many to speculate that it is the Yangwang U8, possibly a new version given subtle differences around the wheel arches.

The new model is widely expected to make its official debut and launch at a BYD technology press conference scheduled for March 5.

Last year Chery X3L tried to climb this, video below.

Last November, Chery’s Fulwin X3L underwent a test on the actual Tianmen Mountain Thousand-Step Staircase. The test failed, resulting in some damage to the scenic spot, and Chery subsequently issued an apology.

Chery X3L failed at climbing.

By constructing such challenging test scenarios within a dedicated factory environment, BYD not only safeguards natural environments and cultural heritage but also ensures it can test freely at its own lab.
