Sunwoda Electronic Co. Chairman Wang Wei has formally addressed circulating reports regarding Volvo Car’s global recall of its EX30 electric vehicles due to battery safety concerns, stating that online rumors linking his company directly to the defective batteries are inaccurate.
In an interview with Jiupai News on January 14, Wang clarified that the battery packs in question were not directly supplied by Sunwoda. “The battery packs were actually provided by factories within Volvo’s own system,” Wang explained. He further noted that while the battery cells were manufactured by a joint venture between Geely and Sunwoda (Shandong Geely Sunwoda Co., Ltd.), Sunwoda holds only a minority 30% stake in this venture.
This clarification comes amid growing attention following Volvo’s recall of 33,777 EX30 vehicles worldwide, including 10,440 in the UK market, after reports that approximately 0.02% of the battery cells were overheating. The situation gained urgency after a Volvo EX30 caught fire at a dealership in Brazil in November 2025.

According to Volvo’s recall notice in Brazil, the issue stems from manufacturing defects in the high-voltage battery cells that could potentially cause internal short circuits within the battery modules.
Sunwoda officials have also issued a statement confirming that the transaction involving the recalled EX30 batteries is unrelated to Sunwoda Power. They explained that while the joint venture produced the cells, they were supplied to Volvo’s battery system provider, which then assembled them into battery packs for sale to Volvo.
A source close to Sunwoda revealed to reporters of Jiupai News that in this case, the battery pack design, battery management system (BMS), thermal management, and structural components were all designed and manufactured by Viridi E-Mobility Technology (Ningbo) Co., Ltd., a Geely subsidiary.
This clarification comes shortly after Viridi filed a lawsuit against Sunwoda seeking 2.31 billion yuan (323 million USD) in damages for alleged quality defects in battery cells supplied between June 2021 and December 2023.
