On November 28, 2025, Tsinghua University and Seres Automobile Co., Ltd. officially inaugurated the Tsinghua‑Seres Battery Innovation Technology Joint Research Centre, as reported by IT-home. The centre will research next‑generation electric vehicle batteries, integrating academic study, technological development, and potential product applications.
The inauguration ceremony included senior leaders from both Tsinghua and Seres. Tsinghua Vice President Peng Gang said the centre aligns with national priorities under China’s 15th Five‑Year Plan and reflects structured university‑industry collaboration in critical technology fields. He noted that combining Tsinghua’s research expertise with Seres’s industrial experience addresses technical challenges in battery systems and contributes to China’s energy security and sustainable transportation objectives.
Zhang Xinghai, Chairman and founder of Seres Group, said the centre marks a new stage of cooperation. He stated that the facility will focus on battery and safety technology research and provide opportunities for researchers to develop practical skills. The centre will also investigate areas such as battery design, safety standards, and production methods.
Next‑generation battery research for electric vehicles generally focuses on improving energy density, charging speed, lifespan, and thermal management. Dedicated research centres allow systematic study of these areas, combining laboratory experiments, simulations, and prototyping. The Tsinghua‑Seres centre will provide laboratory facilities, testing equipment, and industrial insight to advance these efforts, though no technical results or prototypes have been reported.
The Tsinghua‑Seres Joint Research Centre reflects a broader trend in China of linking academic institutions with automotive manufacturers to support the development of new energy vehicle technologies.
