BYD has released a new variant of its compact electric hatchback, the Seagull Free Edition (自在版), in China. Priced at 78,800 yuan (approx. 10,800 USD), the new version features an upgraded bright cabin, expanded safety features, and a 405 km CLTC-rated range. The launch was accompanied by an announcement that Seagull’s cumulative sales have surpassed one million units since its initial launch in April 2023.
Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, the Seagull Free Edition retains the model’s front-mounted 55 kW electric motor and 135 Nm torque output. It utilises a 38.88 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery and supports DC fast charging, allowing for a 30% to 80% recharge in approximately 30 minutes at room temperature.
Design updates include a revised “BYD” badge at the rear, which matches the front fascia, and a new full-fabric roof lining for improved durability. The interior also introduces a two-tone version of BYD’s “Sand Dune Pink” trim. A Type-A and Type-C charging port is now standard in the front row, with the Type-C interface delivering up to 60W. All trims include intelligent power-on/off functionality for ease of use.
The Free Edition features a 12.8-inch floating touchscreen powered by BYD’s DiLink 100 infotainment system, offering voice interaction and cloud services. Higher trims include the “God’s Eye C” (天神之眼C) triple-camera driver assistance suite. Six airbags are standard across the lineup, and enhancements have been made to the lighting, horn, and air conditioning systems.
Seagull remains BYD’s entry-level model in the Ocean series, with dimensions of 3,780 mm in length, 1,715 mm in width, and 1,540 mm in height, on a 2,500 mm wheelbase. The model is positioned to appeal to urban EV buyers and young consumers seeking a compact electric vehicle.
BYD marked the Seagull’s one millionth unit on June 30 at its Xi’an plant. From January to May 2025, global Seagull sales reached 233,126 units, a 50% year-over-year increase, with 144,204 units sold in China, ranking third behind Geely and Wuling.
In June, the Seagull began its European launch as the Dolphin Surf, priced from 22,990 EUR (approx. 26,900 USD) in 15 countries. The export version features a longer body and minor modifications to the drivetrain. In May, BYD reported 60,131 global sales, with 29,026 exported.
The Seagull range in China starts at 63,800 yuan (approx. 8,900 USD) for the base 305 km model. Government and BYD-offered trade-in subsidies are available, including up to 20,000 yuan (approx. 2,800 USD) in incentives.
