$10K EV? China's BYD Just Broke the Electric Price Ceiling

The Next Big Shift in Affordable Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicle technology has made impressive progress in recent years, but pricing remains one of the biggest hurdles for widespread adoption. EVs often carry a premium, sometimes costing as much as 10 million KRW (about 7,200 USD) more than their gasoline-powered counterparts, which discourages many potential buyers. As a result, EV manufacturers are doubling down on strategies to reduce costs and make electric vehicles more accessible to a broader audience.

China, in particular, is leading the charge in this effort. Thanks to strong government support and lower labor costs, Chinese automakers are aggressively entering the market with affordable EVs. BYD, China’s leading electric vehicle brand, recently made headlines by introducing a new model priced at around 14.5 million KRW (approximately $10,440).

Introducing the Yuan Up Pilot: The Budget-Friendly EV

One of the most exciting developments in BYD’s lineup is the Yuan Up Pilot, a budget-friendly version of the Yuan Up. In international markets, the Yuan Up is known as the Atto 2, a compact SUV smaller than the Atto 3 (known as the Yuan Plus in China). With dimensions of 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, the Yuan Up is roughly the same size as the Hyundai Kona, making it a perfect fit for urban environments.

The Yuan Up Pilot is built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, designed specifically for electric vehicles. The base model is powered by a 32 kWh LFP battery paired with a 94-hp electric motor, delivering 18.4 kg.m of torque. For those seeking more range, the long-range version features a 45 kWh battery with either the same 94 hp motor or an upgraded 174 hp motor producing 29.6 kg.m of torque. According to China’s CLTC (China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle) standards, the base model offers a range of 301 km (187 miles), while the long-range version can travel up to 401 km (249 miles). The international Atto 2 long-range high-performance model, certified by the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure), offers a range of 312 km (194 miles).

Yuan Up Pilot: A Game-Changer for the Compact EV Market

Priced at just around 14.5 million KRW (approximately $10,440), the Yuan Up Pilot is positioned to disrupt the compact electric vehicle market. This model was launched by BYD to celebrate surpassing 1.5 million global EV sales in the first half of 2023. At about 25% cheaper than the standard Yuan Up, it represents a major step forward in making EVs more affordable without sacrificing key features.

To achieve this lower price, BYD made some adjustments, including reducing the size of the center display from 12.8 inches to 10.1 inches and removing the God’s Eye advanced driver assistance system. Despite these changes, the Yuan Up Pilot retains many of the same high-quality features found in the original Yuan Up, offering strong value for buyers who prioritize affordability without compromising essential EV attributes.

A Potential Game Changer?

Currently, there are no plans for the Yuan Up Pilot or its international counterpart, the Atto 2. However, if the Yuan Up Pilot were to make its way into American markets, it could fundamentally reshape the landscape of affordable EVs. While exact pricing remains unclear, estimates suggest the model could be priced in the low 20 million KRW (about 14,400 USD) range, offering a very competitive alternative to many of the budget-friendly compact EVs already on the market, such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Mini Electric.
