US battery electric vehicle (BEV) manufacturer Tesla celebrated a major milestone, with production at its Shanghai Gigafactory in China surpassing four million units this week, six years after the first car rolled off the production line.
The Shanghai plant is Tesla’s first overseas vehicle assembly facility, with production launched in December 2019. Last year the facility, which makes the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV, accounted for almost half of Tesla’s global deliveries. The plant shipped a total of 916,660 vehicles in 2024, down 3% on the previous year, with local sales rising by 9% to 657,102 units while exports fell by 25% to 259,558 units.

In the first eleven months of 2025, the Shanghai Gigafactory shipped a total of 754,561 vehicles – down by around 9% year-on-year, with retail sales in China falling by 7% to 531,855 units, while exports fell by 10% to 222,706 units.
Total shipments of the Model Y fell by 4.4% to 472,805 units year-to-date, while Model 3 shipments were down by over 14% to 281,756 units.
