The Smart #2 electric city car from Geely and Mercedes-Benz is set to debut in China at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show this April. It will be mass-produced in the Middle Kingdom and officially enter Chinese and European markets by the end of 2026.
The Smart #2 was first teased in China in early September as the fourth model in the brand’s EV line. It’s worth noting that Smart is currently a 50:50 joint venture between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, established in 2019. It is headquartered in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Its current model line comprises the Smart #1, the Smart #3, and the Smart #5.
This year, Smart will launch two more cars in China. The first is the Smart #6 EHD plug-in hybrid sedan with a length of 4,906 mm. Smart steers away from producing small cars. However, this band will return to its roots with the second model scheduled for the 2026 launch. It is the #2 two-door city car.
Smart #2 to debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show
Smart officials disclosed that the #2 pre-production prototype will make a public debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show in late April. It will stand on the new ECA architecture and offer two doors, two seats, and a Geely-developed powertrain. The Mercedes-Benz team will be responsible for the exterior styling of the Smart #2.
Currently, the car is in the final development stage, as it was previously spotted during road tests in December 2025. Previously, Smart global CEO Tong Xiangbei shared that making a microcar is more complex than developing a large car. At the same time, the president of Smart Europe, Dirk Adelmann, revealed that the company will ensure the model’s profitability.
In December 2025, Smart representatives shared that the #2 will begin mass production “in months.” There is a chance that this model will enter the market shortly after its prototype is presented at the Beijing Auto Show. Based on previous spy shots, the Smart #2 retains the design language of the petrol-powered Smart ForTwo model. It has short overhangs, oval-shaped headlamps, and relatively large wheels.
According to previous information, the Smart #2 will adopt a single electric motor in the rear axle and a 30 kWh battery. Its length is around 2.7 meters. The wheelbase reaches 1.9 meters. The Smart #2 aims to boost the brand’s sales in China. For clarity, Smart delivered 30,799 vehicles in 2025, according to China EV DataTracker. Smart currently operates in 39 markets worldwide.
