The MG4 530 Smart Edition has begun deliveries in China, now featuring batteries from CATL instead of the initially planned Ruipu Lanjun units, according to Sina Car News. MG General Manager Chen Cui explained that the adjustment was made to meet October delivery targets amid limited battery production capacity. All 530 Smart Edition units will now use CATL batteries exclusively, rather than a mix of suppliers.

The 530 Smart Edition is positioned in the sub-100,000 yuan (approximately 14,100 USD) segment and offers a 530-kilometre range CLTC along with advanced driver-assistance features, including highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA). MG emphasises that these features are key to the vehicle’s competitiveness in this price bracket.

Since its market introduction in late August, the MG4 has seen rapid sales growth. Data from China Automotive Industry Research indicates that MG4 deliveries reached 11,790 units in September, a year-on-year increase of 181.4%. The first whole month of deliveries surpassed the 10,000-unit threshold, highlighting the model’s strong market traction.

The switch to CATL batteries has attracted attention in the automotive industry. While initially a supply chain adjustment, the move was widely reported online and received positive feedback. Observers noted that CATL’s established technology and production capacity may contribute to increased consumer confidence in battery performance and safety.

Launched at the Chengdu Auto Show in August 2025, the MG4 is a compact electric hatchback built on SAIC’s E3 pure electric platform. It comes in five trims, priced from 65,800 to 99,800 yuan (approx. 9,140–13,860 USD), powered by a six-in-one electric motor producing 120 kW with a top speed of 160 km/h. Battery options include 42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh packs, offering 437 km and 530 km ranges, respectively, with fast-charging support. The top-trim Anxin Edition uses a semi-solid-state battery.

The MG4 measures 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm high, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Exterior highlights include illuminated MG branding, arrow-shaped rear lights inspired by the MG Cyberster, and six body colours. Inside, it features the MG x Oppo Smart Connectivity system with screens up to 15.6 inches, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 and Horizon Journey J6e platforms, supporting high-speed NOA, lane-keeping, automated lane changes, and parking assist.

The MG4 competes against China’s compact EV models, such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Geely Geome Xingyuan.
