Mazda’s first mid-size electric SUV developed under its Chinese joint venture has officially begun production. The Mazda EZ-60 rolled off the line on August 4 at Changan Mazda’s plant in Nanjing, entering the final stage ahead of market launch. As of August 4, the company reported over 38,000 reservations.
The EZ-60 will be Changan Mazda’s second global new energy export model after the Mazda EZ-6 sedan (also known as the Mazda 6e internationally). It features Mazda’s “Kodo” design elements and incorporates aerodynamic enhancements, including a nine-channel airflow system. Engineering teams from China, Japan, and Europe collaborated on vehicle tuning to address handling and stability for an electric powertrain.
The vehicle is equipped with an innovative cockpit system powered by a 4nm automotive-grade chip. It supports multi-modal interaction systems developed with Doubao AI, Mianbi Intelligent, and Alibaba’s Qianwen. Safety features include a reinforced body structure consisting of seven horizontal and five vertical beams, 2,000 MPa ultra-high-strength steel, and active safety systems.
Changan Mazda stated that the Nanjing facility was upgraded with a dedicated production line for the EZ-60’s aerodynamic design, with a reported investment of nearly 200 million yuan (approx. 27.6 million USD). The plant has implemented a quality traceability system covering parts procurement, in-line inspections, and post-assembly testing.
Before production, over 800 test vehicles were used to complete more than 400 validation programs, including 1.8 million component-level verifications. Reported road testing exceeded 3 million kilometres, including 500,000 kilometres of durability testing and road validation across eight European countries.
According to the company, the EZ-60’s production utilises China’s new energy vehicle supply chain and incorporates manufacturing processes based on Mazda’s global standards. Changan Mazda has launched a small-deposit reservation program for the model, offering a 10 yuan (approx. 1.4 USD) deposit that accumulates daily until launch.
The EZ-60 project is included in Changan Mazda’s broader new energy vehicle strategy, which involves developing products in China for international markets. The company plans to continue using the Nanjing plant to support additional future models under this strategy.
