The electric successor of the MG7 fastback sedan was seen in China shortly after it had been teased online. The new car will likely enter global markets with flush door handles, a roof-mounted LiDAR, and an electric powertrain.
On January 29, the ex-British car brand MG shared a picture of a new BEV sedan, announcing an expansion of its new energy lineup. The SAIC-owned company didn’t provide more details regarding the teased car. However, various Chinese sources reported that this car will become an electric derivative of the ongoing petrol-powered MG7.

On February 20, this mysterious EV was spotted in the underground parking in China. Photos of the car were shared online by a Weibo account called Sugar Design. The car in spy shots aligns with an earlier teaser in terms of body outline. It has wide sculpted rear fenders, a sloped bonnet line, and thin headlamps.
The front end of the spotted vehicle has a rectangular air intake with a thin slot above it. Such a design is common for plug-in hybrid and range-extended models in China. It is an interesting development as the MG7’s successor was previously referred to as a BEV-only model. Spy shots revealed that there is a feasible possibility that this fastback sedan will also adopt a PHEV version.

The new model adopts five-spoke rims, semi-hidden door handles, and a roof-mounted LiDAR. From the back, the car has a large tailgate. It seems that the electric MG7 will adopt an active spoiler and a single taillight strip. The car’s interior has five seats with sporty front chairs with integrated headrests and pronounced shoulder support.
There is currently no information about the specs of the electric MG7. However, there is a high chance it will stay close to the Saic Z7 (Shangjie Z7) sedan-coupe, jointly developed by SAIC and Huawei. The new model will likely debut at the Beijing Auto Show 2026 in late April.
The petrol-powered MG7 is currently on sale in China with a price range of 125,900 – 178,900 yuan (18,220 – 25,900 USD). It boasts dimensions of 4884/1889/1447 mm. The entry-level model has a 1.5-liter engine for 188 hp paired with a 7-speed DCT. A more powerful variant offers a 2-liter ICE for 261 hp, and the same transmission.
