Dongfeng has unveiled a variant of its eπ 007 sedan, marking China’s first mass-production vehicle equipped with four in-wheel motors (hub motors). This came through the recent Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing documents.

The new model maintains the dimensions of its predecessor, measuring 4880mm in length, 1915mm in width, and 1476mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2915mm. The most significant innovation lies in its powertrain – four independent in-wheel motors, each producing 100 kilowatts, manufactured by Shanghai Automobile Electric Drive Co., Ltd. This will enable it to deliver a total power output of 400kW (536 hp).

The exterior design remains largely unchanged, featuring a fastback silhouette with a sleek, tech-forward appearance. The front fascia showcases sharp, narrow headlights and a minimalist double-T logo, while the rear sports a continuous LED light bar that complements the panoramic glass roof.

This innovative in-wheel motor system brings several advantages:

  • Improved efficiency with approximately 30% less mechanical loss
  • Enhanced manoeuvrability with a 10-15% reduced turning radius
  • Independent wheel control for superior traction and stability
  • Increased interior space due to the elimination of traditional drivetrain components
  • 25% more efficient energy regeneration through precise brake control

The vehicle’s architecture allows for flexible battery placement and creates a flat floor design, improving passenger comfort and cargo space. The removal of traditional powertrain components also results in 20-30% lower maintenance costs.

Editor’s comment

Dongfeng eπ 007 is not the world’s first mass-produced new energy model with four in-wheel motors. However, the previous production models, whether the Lightyear 0 or the Lordstown Endurance, all came from start-ups, and the companies that produced them have since gone bankrupt.

Dongfeng is one of China’s top automotive companies. Therefore, we can say that this car will be the world’s only mass-produced new energy model with four in-wheel motors, and it’s from a stable, established manufacturer.
