
Last fall, Panait dissected all three standardized methodologies, and found the CLTC is based on extremely congested urban environments, with prolonged idle periods and lower average speeds. More importantly, it doesn’t fully account for the use of in-car heating or air conditioning. As a result, Tesla’s Model Y, the world’s best-selling EV, sees in its RWD/Long Range configurations a wide discrepancy in battery-range estimates: 575 km under EPA guidelines; 621 km using the European WLTP; and 752 km based on CLTC testing.
