On December 9, Changan’s 30 millionth vehicle rolled off the production line in China since its entry in the automotive industry in 1983, taking nearly 40 years, making it the first independent Chinese automaker to reach this milestone. However, from the 20 millionth to the 30 millionth vehicle, Changan only took four years.

Currently, Changan has five sub-brands, including Avatr, Nevo, Deepal, Changan, and Kaicheng.

On July 29, a re-organization occurred where the China Changan Automobile Group Co., Ltd. was officially established as a new state-owned enterprise directly under the management of China’s central government, along with FAW and Dongfeng. At the first media briefing, Chairman Zhu Huarong stated that the company aims to achieve a production and sales volume of 5 million vehicles by 2030, with new energy vehicles (NEVs) accounting for over 60% of sales and overseas sales accounting for over 30%.

Other automakers who achieved this milestone include the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) and FAW-Volkswagen joint ventures earlier this year in China. For comparison, it took FAW-Volkswagen 34 years to reach this milestone and Volkswagen 46 years.

In November, Changan sold 283,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 2.3%. This includes 125,000 NEVs, a year-on-year increase of 23%; and overseas sales of 55,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 47%.

In particular, Changan ranked 11th in NEV exports last month, with only 4,189 units exported, trailing behind NEV startups including Xpeng and Leapmotor.

Looking ahead, at the 2025 Guangzhou Auto Show last month, Changan announced that it plans to launch more than 50 NEV models by 2030, all of which will be equipped with Changan’s new Tianshu intelligent architecture, covering entry-level SUVs, mid-to-large MPVs, and off-road vehicles.
