BYD extends traction battery warranty in Norway to 250,000 kilometres

Previously, the warranty covered eight years but was limited to 200,000 kilometres. This meant that the 50,000-kilometre increase primarily benefits high-mileage drivers who cover long distances in a short period, although the warranty still expires after eight years. Ideally, this allows for an average of 31,250 kilometres per year to fully utilise the warranty period. The extended battery warranty applies to all BYD electric vehicles, except for the eTP3 electric van.

BYD highlights that this places the company well ahead of the competition: the industry standard for battery warranties is just 160,000 kilometres. Like most competitors, BYD’s warranty applies if the State of Health (SoH) of the traction battery falls below 70%.

In other words, BYD would be required to replace, repair, or otherwise compensate for the battery if its capacity drops below 70% during the warranty period. By increasing the mileage limit to 250,000 kilometres within eight years, BYD is sending a strong message to its competitors.

However, such high mileage is truly relevant only for extreme high-mileage drivers: in Norway, the average electric car is driven around 13,000 kilometres per year, which is far below the aforementioned average of 31,250 kilometres per year. This raises the question of whether this change is primarily a marketing strategy or a genuine customer benefit.

According to BYD, the battery remains the biggest concern for many customers considering the purchase of an electric vehicle. With the improved battery warranty, BYD aims to significantly reduce this barrier and boost consumer confidence in electric vehicles.

In addition to the battery warranty, BYD offers a standard vehicle warranty of six years or 150,000 kilometres on electric vehicles in Norway, as it does in Germany. “The strong combination of standard and battery warranties reflects the quality and reliability of BYD technology. For us, it’s about providing Norwegian car buyers with the best conditions for a safe and seamless everyday experience with electric vehicles,” says Simen Wøien Christensen, Sales Manager at BYD Norway.
