A filing by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has revealed an updated version of the BYD Atto 3, the compact electric SUV widely exported by the automaker. The model, sold in China as the Yuan Plus, appears with revised styling, a larger body, and a new rear-wheel-drive electric platform.

Technical overview

MIIT documents list a single rear-mounted electric motor available in two output variants rated at 200 kW or 240 kW, both using a permanent-magnet synchronous design. The motor listed in the filing carries the model code TZ200XSBR and is produced by Zhengzhou BYD Auto.

The vehicle uses a lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by BYD’s FinDreams battery division, with cells produced by Wenzhou FinDreams Battery and pack assembly carried out by Changsha FinDreams Battery. Battery capacity was not disclosed in the filing.

MIIT documentation lists a top speed of 190 km/h for the vehicle.

Driver-assistance hardware expands with additional optional sensors. The filing lists roof-mounted lidar as optional equipment, together with front radar and fender-mounted cameras. Details of the computing platform powering the driver-assistance system were not stated in the source.

According to Chinese media outlet IT-Home, the updated model may adopt BYD’s second-generation Blade battery and support the company’s flash-charging technology. The report states the battery can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes, though this capability was not confirmed in the MIIT filing.

Product context

Dimension changes are among the most visible updates to the vehicle. The revised Atto 3 measures 4665 mm in length, 1895 mm in width, and 1675 mm in height with a 2770 mm wheelbase. The SUV also has a curb weight of 1690 kg and a gross vehicle weight of 2115 kg, according to the regulatory filing.

Exterior revisions include a redesigned front fascia with a silver grille-style panel and slimmer headlamp units. The lower bumper incorporates vertically arranged cooling openings and a trapezoidal central intake.

The vehicle offers 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options, together with semi-hidden door handles and optional two-tone body finishes. At the rear, the SUV receives revised lighting integrated into a full-width panel, along with a split high-mounted brake light and rear window wiper.

Market positioning

Compact electric SUVs remain one of the most competitive segments in China’s EV market. Rivals include the Tesla Model Y as well as domestic competitors such as Geely’s Galaxy E5 and GAC Aion’s Aion Y.

The Atto 3 has historically served as one of BYD’s most widely exported electric vehicles, helping the brand establish a presence in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Moving the updated version to a rear-wheel-drive architecture could align the model with newer EV platform strategies used across BYD’s expanding product lineup.

Industry context

A recent real-world safety incident brought unexpected attention to the BYD Atto 3 after a vehicle in Jerusalem survived a nearby ballistic missile strike while carrying five occupants. Local emergency services confirmed the passengers survived, with injuries ranging from moderate to minor, while the vehicle’s battery system did not ignite.

The Atto 3 also sits within a broader technical upgrade path. In February, BYD revealed the Atto 3 Evo, an updated version planned for overseas markets with an 800-volt architecture, faster charging capability, and optional all-wheel drive, indicating the model line is moving toward higher-performance EV platforms.

Outlook

The MIIT filing indicates the updated Atto 3 is moving through China’s homologation pipeline, a step that typically precedes domestic launch approval. Chinese media reports indicate the model could open pre-sales around mid-year, although the automaker has not officially confirmed a launch schedule.

If introduced on the new rear-drive platform as suggested in the filing, the update would represent a significant mechanical shift for one of BYD’s most internationally recognised electric SUVs.
