Beijing Hyundai has officially released interior images of its first pure electric SUV, the Elexio, which is anticipated to launch in the third quarter of this year.

The interior is highlighted by a 27-inch dual-screen display that boasts 4K resolution and a brightness of 1000 cd/m². The steering wheel features paddle shifters, allowing drivers to switch between four levels of kinetic energy recovery and activate a one-pedal driving mode.

The Elexio offers dual-zone synchronised wireless charging for both the driver and front passenger. Storage solutions are abundant, including 29 storage compartments, a sliding privacy box, and dual-way expandable cup holders.

The exterior

The Elexio SUV has already applied for a sales license in China. It will be available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The FWD version features a single 160 kW motor, while the AWD version adds a 73 kW rear motor, resulting in a combined output of 233 kW (312 hp). Both versions have a top speed of 185 km/h. The vehicle will utilise a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by FinDreams, a subsidiary of BYD, with an estimated range of up to 700 km under CLTC conditions.

The Hyundai Elexio was revealed in April at the Shanghai Auto Show, without sharing any specs or details. The global debut followed on May 8, “demonstrating Hyundai’s electrification transformation”. The Beijing-based joint venture later revealed that the Elexio will be built on Hyundai’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and that the EV marks a comeback for (foreign) joint ventures in China.

Editor’s comment

The integration of a Chinese development team and a localized supply chain, coupled with a comprehensive reconstruction of its native pure electric architecture, “three-electric” system (battery, motor, and electronic control), positions this vehicle as an acceleration of Beijing Hyundai’s efforts in the Chinese market during the new energy era. However, from the perspective of current Chinese consumers’ vehicle selection criteria and the multi-dimensional scenarios of vehicle functionality, the core product highlights of the Beijing Hyundai Elexio that warrant further discussion have yet to be fully revealed by the official announcement.
