Xiaomi has dismissed Thomas Wang, a senior employee of its China marketing division, after an internal probe found violations related to confidential information and conflicts of interest, according to The Paper. The decision was announced by Xiaomi’s Professional Ethics Committee and made in line with the company’s Employee Misconduct Handling Measures and Integrity and Clean Governance Code.
According to the announcement, Thomas Wang was removed from his role following an internal compliance review that uncovered irregularities in data handling and professional conduct. Company officials said the decision followed a rapid investigation process once concerns were raised. During the review, Wang Teng reportedly admitted to sharing Xiaomi Auto’s sensitive business information with outside parties for personal benefit, which factored into the final disciplinary decision.
Thomas Wang has held multiple senior roles within Xiaomi, including General Manager of China Marketing, General Manager of the Redmi brand, General Manager of the Redmi marketing department, and official spokesperson for the Redmi brand. He was classified as a level 21 mid-level manager.
Well known among Xiaomi followers, Thomas Wang had a significant presence on Chinese social media. His verified Weibo account “Wang Teng Thomas” was linked to his Xiaomi and Redmi positions, drawing more than 1.78 million followers. His content often generated high engagement, with some posts reaching over 100,000 daily views and cumulative video plays of over 38 million. His last Weibo post was published on August 29, and his Douyin account was last updated on August 30. His Kuaishou account has since been suspended.
On September 8, Thomas Wang issued a public statement acknowledging his dismissal. “I am ashamed and apologise to everyone. I made mistakes in the past and accept the consequences,” he wrote. He also thanked company founder Lei Jun and Xiaomi leadership for their support, adding that he would continue to back both Xiaomi and the Redmi brand.
Thomas Wang joined Xiaomi in 2016 and later worked in several positions across the company, including product, regional, and brand leadership roles. He was most recently promoted in 2024 to head both the Redmi brand and Xiaomi’s China marketing operations.
At the time of publication, Xiaomi has not released further details about the internal investigation.
